Test Session
Testing will be done on a day and at a time that is convenient for you. We can certainly plan to do this testing on a Saturday. This testing will take roughly two to three hours. We ask that you bring extra diapers and some food or drink for your child. Please be sure your child is well rested at the time of testing. If you have other children, please arrange for childcare for them. You will be involved in the testing, and we do not have staff to watch other children.
We have some children with normal hearing who will be tested. If your child has a hearing loss please be sure that your child’s hearing aid(s) or cochlear implant(s) are working properly on the day of testing.
Please be sure to wear something comfortable yourself because you will be sitting on the floor for part of the time.
If a problem should arise with this test time or day, please call the person who made the appointment with you as soon as possible. Additionally, please call them if your child becomes ill near the date of testing, or if his/her hearing aid or implant is not working.
The following things will happen at each session:
1. The person doing the testing will play with your child for a few minutes, with you nearby.
2. You and your child will be videotaped playing together on the floor, just as you do at home.
3. The person doing the testing will play with your child a little more. During this time, you will complete some questionnaires on your own.
4. The person doing the testing will ask you some questions about your child.
In return for your time and the effort it takes to participate in a study such as this, you will be reimbursed $50.00 at the end of the session. In about 5 months the examiner will contact you again to schedule another appointment.
As you can see, these procedures are meant to be simple. But as simple as they may seem, we will be getting important information about how intervention affects the development of young children with hearing loss.
Thank you very much for your time and effort agreeing to participate in this important study.
